SIGHTS/SITES

Sights/Sites is an ongoing series of handmade mixed media collages that looks at the black female body as a once-colonized mass of land still fighting against the impositions of multiple forms of intersecting oppressions.

Prevailing stereotypes about said body are examined from alternating perspectives of the oppressor/oppressed binary and pull into focus that point of intersection as the ultimate site of contention.

In this series, contemporary print media is positioned to assume the place of the white, male colonizer, in an attempt to underscore the less-than-subtle ways centuries-old stereotypes are continuously perpetuated and forced on a group of women traditionally denied control of their own representation.
